Périgueux: Hotel des Barris: "Good value rooms, very helpful staff"

Fantastically located hotel overlooking the river and cathedral and within a couple of minutes' walk to the old part of town where there are great little shops, cafés and a brilliant market at the weekend.

The room we stayed in was quaint but comfortable with a small but newly fitted bathroom. The room wasn't big but was definitely adequate for the two of us. We had a great view of the river and cathedral from our room too. At €49 (excl breakfast) in high season I thought this room was great value (the bog-standard Ibis across the street was €65).

The staff on reception are very friendly, speak many languages fluently and go out of their way to help you with any queries, even if you just want to know about other areas in France! The guy on reception on one afternoon spent over an hour researching on the internet places to stay, places to visit and calling hotels in another town for my husband just to help us out!

There is a car park just across the street where you can park for free on a first come first served basis. You can also park your car in the hotel's garage for a small fee and you can leave your bike in the garage for free if there's enough room.

We didn't eat there but there's a restaurant in the hotel which looked great and not expensive.

Perigueux itself was beautiful. I had never heard of the town before but we happened to need somewhere to stay en route to somewhere else and were amazed at how fabulous the town is. I could have wandered around the fresh produce market on the Saturday for hours and we walked around the little network of streets all afternoon. We actually wanted to stay an extra night as we loved Perigueux so much but the hotel was already booked for the next night so you might want to book ahead for weekends in the summer!
